Is New Town a part of Kolkata?

Yes, New Town is a well-planned area in northeastern Kolkata. New Town is developing fast, so several high-rise buildings are in various parts. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority has divided New Town into three significant parts. 



New Town comes under the North 24 Parganas district and has eventually emerged as the second IT hub of Kolkata. New Town comprises residential developments, corporate parks, commercial cum retail complexes, and, last but not least institutional buildings.

Rajarhat, Baguiati, Kestopur, and Lake Town are prominent localities close to New Town. The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) has planned all the developing infrastructure of New Town like roads, sewerage lines, drains, water supply lines, other beautification works, etc.

Different sectors of New Town

As mentioned earlier, New Town was divided into three major parts: Action Area I, II, and III. Action Area I consists of Malls, Commercial Plots, Sub-CBD (Central Business District), and Planned Residential plots.

Action Area II is the main Central Business District area with renowned Institutions and Business Parks. Moreover, you will also find vast and luxurious residential complexes in Action Area II. Finally, Action Area III  mainly has high-rise residential complexes and mini townships.

Main Buildings and Infrastructures in New Town

Some vital educational institutions in New Town include DPS, Techno International, The New Town School, Aliah University, and Narayana School. Ohio Hospital, Sankara Nethralaya, Tata Medical Centre, and Charnock Hospital are some of the renowned healthcare facilities in the region. 

New Town has over 200 under-construction projects and more than 148 ready-to-move-in projects. Most significant housing developers, including DLF, Tata Housing, Unitech, etc., have their projects in New Town. 

Several IT companies are building in New Town, including Cognizant, TCS, Wipro, etc. Moreover, in New Town, you will also find several entertainment parks like the ECO Park and the Eco Urban Village, where you can go and eventually enjoy the weekends with your family members.

Primary Transportation in New Town

In New Town, the primary mode of transportation includes:

In New Town, you will find around 300 buses that operate on around 25 different bus routes. 

Connectivity from Newtown Kolkata to the rest of Kolkata

Rail: The distance of New Town from the Sealdah Railway Station is 15 km. The New Garia Airport line of the Kolkata Metro is under construction. The 30 km metro line will run along Biswa-Bangla Road, providing good connectivity with Dum Dum in the North and Salt Lake.

Road: Internally, Biswa-Bangla Road connects New Town to Salt Lake in the south and VIP Road in the west. NH-12 and S-3 are two main roads that pass through New Town, while on the other hand, VIP road connects New Town to the rest of Kolkata.

Airport: You can easily access the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport using the VIP road and EM Bypass. EM Bypass connects New Town to east and south Kolkata.
